Our commitment to the planet
At Plaster Mouldings Direct, sustainability isn't a marketing position — it's what we've always done. Handcrafting from natural materials, preserving heritage buildings, and making products designed to outlive us by generations.
The ingredients
Every moulding we make uses the same two ingredients craftsmen have relied on for over 160 years. Nothing synthetic, nothing that ends up poisoning the ground.
A naturally occurring mineral, quarried from the earth. Non-toxic, biodegradable, and 100% recyclable. Gypsum releases no harmful chemicals and has been used safely in buildings for thousands of years — and can be reclaimed and reused indefinitely without loss of quality.
A natural plant fibre from the jute plant, woven into scrim that reinforces the gypsum. Fully biodegradable, with a low carbon footprint — and a far more sustainable reinforcement than the synthetic glass fibre used in modern manufactured alternatives.
Our mouldings are made by hand in small batches. No industrial machinery, no energy-intensive manufacturing lines. Just skilled craftsmen, traditional moulds, and techniques that have been passed down over three decades.
Gypsum can be reclaimed, reground and reused indefinitely. Unlike polystyrene foam or paper-faced coving, our products don't create permanent waste — and any off-cuts from fitting can be returned to the earth without harm.
The real green argument
A fibrous plaster cornice fitted today will still be in perfect condition when your grandchildren are grown. The foam and paper-faced alternatives sold in DIY stores? They rarely survive a single redecoration.
Heritage as sustainability
We work with English Heritage, the National Trust, and owners of listed buildings across the UK. Because the most eco-friendly building is one that already exists — and the most sustainable feature is one that never needed removing.
Avoiding the energy and materials cost of new manufacture entirely. A skilled repair preserves the original, saves resources, and keeps the authentic character of the building intact.
Preserving original features avoids the carbon cost of new production, new transport, and new installation. Sympathetic restoration is one of the most effective carbon-reduction strategies in construction.
Our City & Guilds trained craftsmen carry forward methods that are over 160 years old. Without practitioners, these skills are lost forever — and with them, the ability to maintain and restore the buildings we've inherited.
Sympathetically restored buildings retain their character, their value, and their contribution to the street. Preserving them reduces pressure to demolish and rebuild — the most wasteful act in construction.
"We are stripping the world bare. Choosing materials that last — that can be repaired, restored, and handed down — is one of the most meaningful things any of us can do."Stewart — Founder, Plaster Mouldings Direct
